Located on the side of AR Highway 293 one mile north of US Highway 278 Eastin the rural Drew County community of Selma, this church had its beginning in 1872 when a lot in the Selma town site was deeded to the trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church to build a structure.
The construction began in 1873, but was completely destroyed by a snowstorm before its completion. In 1874, a local Baptist congregation purchased the vacated lot and hired a Mr. Rector to complete the church building currently standing. In 1885, the Baptist congregation in Selma deeded the church and its property back to the trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In the front lawn of the church you can still see the faint remains of an old military road. This Gothic-style building is painted white and boasts a tall white spire. The interior is mostly in its original state with a unique set of pews. In 1984, the Selma Methodist Church became the first structure in Drew County to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places. This is a popular destination for photography and time of reflection. The Selma Methodist Church Preservation Society (SMCPS) has assumed responsibility for the care and maintenance of this wonderful historic church. It is frequently used, most often for weddings. Contact this page for the contact information of the SMCPS.
